People's Photography: An open air exhibition in Stephen's Green, 26th/27th August 06
On 26th and 27th August, Sarah Varian participated in People's Photography, a weekend event dedicated to the visual. People's Photography is a popular open air photographic exhibition that takes place on Stephen's Green every year. It's a great opportunity for all kinds of photographers to get together to exhibit a wide range of images, whilst also providing the public with a chance to view or purchase prints that may not be available through galleries or retail outlets.
Challenging Perceptions goes to the World Oceans Festival!
Marine Dimensions is delighted to announce that Challenging Perceptions is now touring Ireland! Sarah's images have been on display in Sage's Restaurant over the summer as part of the popular World Oceans Festival in Tramore.
Challenging Perceptions at the Signal Arts Centre
Sarah Varian's exhibition of underwater photography, Challenging Perceptions, has just been shown for the first time in the Signal Arts Centre in Bray. The event has attracted a lot of interest and Sarah would like to thank everyone involved, particularly Jerry Fish (for opening the event with such style!) and Pat O'Suileabhain of the National Sea Life Centre Bray (for providing much needed sponsorship). We hope to run the exhibition in other venues around the country during the year. The event was run as part of a wider programme of activities designed by Marine Dimensions to raise awareness for the marine environment. Please get in touch if you would be interested in sponsoring a similar awareness event or conservation project.
Sarah is an Irish marine biologist and underwater photographer who has worked on a wide variety of conservation projects, including work as a marine protected areas scientist in Africa and New Zealand. She is now devoting much of her time to raising public awareness and understanding of Ireland’s marine environment, using her marine images as an aid for outreach. Apart from stimulating interest in the environment, Sarah hopes to introduce people to underwater photography as an art, combining imaginative compositions with the science and exploration of the sea. Her portfolio ranges from original portraits of Ireland’s colourful and lesser known marine life,
to classic scenes of diversity on coral reefs in the tropics.
Sarah has also started to mix and manipulate some of her images digitally, with the original photographs acting as a kind of palette for the colour and substance that make up the final design. The result is a truly innovative blend of expression that challenges our perceptions of the marine world.
